Jason Mbakwe | Senior Associate, Carey Olsen
Jason Mbakwe is a senior associate in Carey Olsen's dispute resolution and litigation team. He focuses his practice on contentious restructuring and insolvency matters, complex commercial litigation, regulatory and white collar crime investigations.
Jason has extensive experience advising a broad range of stakeholders in distressed situations, including financial institutions, investment funds, bondholders, ad hoc committees, corporate debtors, directors and insolvency practitioners.
Jason regularly advises in relation to formal insolvency procedures in the Cayman Islands; shareholder disputes; minority oppression; directors’ duties; asset recovery; the enforcement of domestic and foreign judgments; information gathering, including Norwich Pharmacal relief; various forms of injunctive relief, including freezing and receivership orders.
Nienke Lillington | Attorney
Nienke is an attorney who specialises in insolvency and restructuring litigation and advice and commercial disputes. Her practice consists of high value and multi-party disputes and litigation, and the cases she is instructed on often include cross-border and multi-jurisdictional elements, including: Ascentra Holdings, Inc. (in Official Liquidation) v Ryunosuke Yoshida & ors. and In re Silicon Valley Bank (in Official Liquidation).
Nienke is also called to the Bar of England & Wales, and she worked as a barrister in London at a leading set of the Commercial Chancer Bar, before moving to the Cayman Islands in 2021. She is a highly experienced advocate with an extensive background in both corporate and personal insolvency matters as well as large-scale commercial litigation, including Robert Tchenguiz & ors. v Grant Thornton & ors. and Chesterfield United Inc (in liquidation) & anor. v Deutsche Bank AG & ors.
Nienke is a Fellow of INSOL International, a member of the IWIRC Cayman Board, a member of the International Insolvency Institute’s NextGen, a member of the RISA Cayman Education Committee, and an honouree of the American Bankruptcy Institute’s “40 Under 40”. Nienke obtained degrees from Harvard Law School, the University of Oxford (New College), L’Institut d’Études Politiques (Paris), and Leiden University.
Matthew Varendorff | Senior Manager, Deloitte & Touche LLP
Matt is a financial advisory specialist with over 16 years of experience, focusing on complex forensic investigations, fraud litigation, and contentious insolvencies.
He provides strategic guidance and in-depth analysis to support legal proceedings and financial disputes.
Hannah Gethin | Senior Manager, Kroll
Hannah is Senior Manager at Kroll, with 18 years’ experience specialising in contentious scenarios and maximising value in distressed situations. Throughout her career, Hannah has developed a deep expertise in a wide range of insolvency and investigation matters, including official liquidations, receiverships, end-of-life fund solutions and has a specific focus on forensic investigations. Hannah’s career has focused on delivering tailored strategies that help clients and stakeholders navigate complex challenges and optimise outcomes.
Hannah serves as the co-chair of events for IWIRC and the Vice President of the ACFE Cayman Island Chapter.
